We meet together to hear from God about His Son, Jesus, through his Word, the Bible and respond to him in prayer, song and service. Our life together is built around the Bible; in our gatherings, in our Growth Groups, and in our ministry teams. We share God's Word with joy and a heartfelt expectation. It gives us clear teaching to help us know God and live for him in the ups and downs of daily life.
1. We are Biblical
We understand God makes himself known primarily through his Word written, the Bible. Our primary experience of God is when he speaks to us through his Word. The Bible has final authority in matters of teaching and living, over reason, tradition, and experience. At St David’s we seek to systematically read the Bible in our public gatherings, our small groups, our one on ones, and our personal reading knowing God’s Word is the Sword of the Spirit, and a light to our path.
From 2 Timothy 3:15–17 in the Bible,
…you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Article VI: Holy Scripture contains all things necessary to salvation: so that whatever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the Holy Scripture, we do understand those Canonical books of the Old and New Testament, of whose authority was never any doubt in the Church.’
So by bringing all things under the authority of the Bible, and seeking to grow in our knowledge of God for faith and life, St David’s is a biblical church.
2. We are Evangelical
We understand the mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus through the sharing of the good news of Jesus. ‘Evangelical’ is a slippery political word these days. The term 'evangelical' comes from the original Greek word meaning 'the good news' or 'the gospel'. In its Bible context, it means we are people who are committed to share the good news of Jesus with others. We have the conviction we are saved through faith in Jesus. We summarise the good news through the Two Ways to Live outline.
From Matthew 28:18–20 in the Bible:
Then Jesus said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’
Article VII, Of the Old Testament: The Old Testament is not contrary to the New: for both in the Old and New Testament everlasting life is offered to humanity by Christ, who is the only Mediator between God and Man, being both God and Man.
So by seeking to share the good news of Jesus as a central part of our mission, St David’s is an evangelical church.
3. We are Reformed
Our theological heritage flows from the Reformation, a period in the 1500s when Biblical teaching was recovered from the practices of the medieval church. The Reformation rediscovered we are saved by God’s grace alone, through faith in Christ alone, to live for his glory alone. The Anglican denomination, (formerly the Church of England) was established in this period as part of the wider reformation movement.
From Ephesians 2:8–10 in the Bible:
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Article XI, Of the Justification of Man : We are accounted righteous before God, only for the merit of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by Faith, and not for our own works or deservings: Therefore that we are justified by Faith only is a most wholesome Doctrine, and very full of comfort
So as St David’s teaches and lives out the teaching and application of the Reformation, St. David's is a Reformed church.
4. We are Spirit-filled
We believe in the person and work of the Holy Spirit. He reveals Christ to us, unites Christ with us, forms Christ in us, and equips us for the service and the mission of the Church.
From Acts 1:8 in the Bible:
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8
Article V. Of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit, proceeding from the Father and the Son, is of one substance, majesty, and glory with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God.
So as we rely on the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church, St David's is a Spirit-filled church.
5. We are Complementarian
We recognize God’s good design in creation for men and women, equal in God’s eyes with respect to faith and saving matters, different with respect to roles in marriage, family, and church. The language of ‘complementarianism’ comes from the Bible’s account of the creation of men and women, equal and different. They are compliments to each other.
From Genesis 1:26–28 in the Bible:
Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it…’
Life in a fallen world means relationships are strained between humans. We seek to live out God’s good design for relationships in marriage, family, and church. By celebrating God’s good design for men and women, equal and different, St David’s is a complementarian Church.
6. We are Anglican
We are part of the Sydney Diocese of The Anglican Church of Australia. Denominations are organizational structures to assist the local gathering of churches. The roles of bishops, ministers, and deacons exist to serve the ministry of the local church. The Anglican church of Australia approves the teaching and principles of the Church of England embodied in the Book of Common Prayer, together with the content of faith expressed in the Thirty-nine Articles.
By upholding the authority of the Bible, and theological principles expressed in The 39 Articles, and the Book of Common Prayer, St David’s is an Anglican Church.
